ABOUT SOPHIA
“Her songwriting has a charm about it that impresses every time. It’s personal, intimate, like listening to a diary entry… and it’s a joy.”

Known for her “bright vocals” and “lyrically complex narratives,” Sophia DeLeo is a New York City based indie folk singer and songwriter. Her writing typically draws from personal experience, focusing in on themes of love, loss, and growth, all from a distinctly female perspective.
Sophia DeLeo got her start performing in theatre at age 7. As a teenager, she taught herself to play guitar, and after her first heartbreak in high school, she began writing songs of her own. “It was the only place I felt I could express myself,” she says. “I wrote about my life, my friendships, relationships, difficult things I’d been through, but I kept it secret. I thought was going to be an actor. The fact that I was making up songs in my bedroom after school didn’t seem so important at the time."
She went on to earn her BFA in musical theatre from The Hartt School and then moved to New York City. She began playing gigs at iconic New York venues like the Bitter End and Rockwood Music Hall and self-released several singles, as well as her debut EP The Boys Who Make Me Cry.
In 2023, Sophia released her sophomore EP Drama Queen, a coming-of-age record that tells the story of her growing up in Falls Church, Virginia. With a central focus on self-forgiveness, compassion, and healing, Drama Queen was heralded for its "captivating storytelling and emotional candidness" by UK based blog Right Chord Music. Sophia toured the record on the "Worth the Wait Tour" with good friend and collaborator Alex Petti (of NYC based rock band good thoughts), and has since played several music festivals, including Meadowlark Music Festival, alongside headliner Fruit Bats.
Sophia is currently back in the studio, working on her new single "Peter Got Engaged" after the song amassed over 100k views on TikTok. She is also working as composer and lyricist on the brand new musical To Cry Witch. Collaborating with book writers Jessica de Maria and Sara Norton, the show tells the story of Martha Carrier and the Salem witch trials. And when she's not busy making music, Sophia works during the day as a preschool teacher.
